Recovery = More support, not more will.
Recovery is a matter of support, not motivation. I think that this is true for recovery from anything.
I can't tell you how often I see those struggling the most and for the longest continue to blame themselves, to shame themselves and to hold the misbelief that their struggle is their fault. We know that eating disorders are biologically based serious mental health illnesses. Not low motivation issues. Period. Science has also shown us the powerful contribution of genetics to this biology. And, at the same time, no parent decides to give their child an eating disorder or mental health issue.
Do not struggle for a single moment more with this idea that you can will yourself well. Allow the red flag of your continued struggle despite your strong will, brilliant mind and incredible strength to signal you to seek more support. There are so many kind and skilled care providers out there who have dedicated their work life to supporting those on their journey to recovery. They are your hope givers. They have the experience and have been witness to the recovery journey. Get help finding them. Start at NEDA.org, medainc.org, allianceforeatingdisorders.org, or Boston Childrens Eating Disorder Program if you are searching for your child or adolescent.
If you are already on your recovery journey and your level of suffering continues to overtake your moments, your meals, your relationships and your joy, start the next conversation about getting more or different support. Each day makes up a part of your life. Each day matters.
